this is kpix 5 news. breaking news. a crazy situation unfolding near boston right now. gunfire. explosions. a suspect facedown on the ground. and tonight the question, is this related to the man hunt for the boston marathon bombers? good evening. i'm juliette goodrich. let's go right to watertown. that's where a manhunt started after a police officer was shot and killed tonight on the m.i.t. campus. police immediately started looking for two suspects in that shooting. here now is dramatic coverage from about 20 minutes ago from a boston tv station. >> we heard the shots fired and we knew there was imminent danger. we could smelsmelled to

be like gunpowder or burning rubber. and then all of a sudden, my photographer, camera in hand, said, look, look! we saw all these officers with their guns drawn. that's when neil, my photographer, said get down! and i got down behind the car door, behind the car, and he got down, i believe, behind the police car. it was a matter of just getting down as quickly as you could at the nearest possible place. so he was about 10 feet in front of me. and then i believe that when they told us to get back even further, when i heard something of a hand grenade, he must have followed me, but he and everyone else has been moved back now on the other side of this yellow tape. i don't know what he was able to shoot video-wise. but i think he was rolling

related possibly to the marathon bombings. now, today the fbi released photo and video images of two potential suspects. they tell us investigators are now reaching out to the public for any information on who and where they might be. >> reporter: after the fbi posted images of the two suspects on their website, they had a record number of hits. in fact, at one point they had so many hits, the entire website crashed. both of these men are considered armed and dangerous. but now they are no longer anonymous. they are known as suspect 1 and suspect 2. the two men are seen carrying backpacks through the crowd at the boston marathon, just minutes before the bombs went off. >> suspect 2 set down a backpack at the site of the second explosion, just in front of the restaurant. >> reporter: early on, investigators focused on just one of the suspects.
1:44 am
but the more they saw, the more they thought he was not alone. the fbi is hoping someone who knows one or both of the men will recognize them. >> though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us. >> reporter: it was an emotional day here in boston. the images of those suspects were released just hours after president obama attended an interfaith service meant to heal and inspire a city in mourning. the president spoke of the three people who died in the attacks as well as the more than 170 who were injured. >> as you begin this long journey of recovery, your city is with you. your commonwealth is with you. your country is with you. >> reporter: he said if the bombers wants to intimidate and terrorize, they chose the wrong city for their target. >> and this time next year, on the third monday in april, the world will return to this great american city to run harder

than ever and to cheer even louder for the 118th boston marathon! >> reporter: boston, he said, will run again. the fbi says after they posted those two images of the suspect on their website, they had a record number of hits. at one point, so many people were logging on, the entire website crash. they are still reminding people to log on fbi.gov. they are encouraging people to speak up. so where do investigators go from hear? face recognition software has been around for several years. but kpix 5's joe vazquez says now it's much more than that. it's called video intelligence. joe? >> it's gotten a lot more advanced. basically video intelligence meancan find these bad guys not just by how they look but even by how they walk. >> we consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous. >> reporter: now that the fbi has released the photos, how
1:46 am
will they find the bombers? >> all the time that this individual has appeared. >> reporter: he says sophisticated software like the kind his company makes produces what he calls video intelligence. the software uses facial recognition to sift through hours and hours of video and hundreds of photos, and it could dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes law enforcement to find even more images of the suspects. >> we're talking from, i'd say, several weeks, several months of investigation time to a matter of days if not hours. >> reporter: it analyzes the shape of a nose, the distance between the hairline, the lips, and can compare video taken later, perhaps at a train station or airport. but video intelligence is more than just facial recognition. some of these software programs examine other factors. your gait, for example, the way you walk. it turns out it's one of a kind. once investigators get a lead, like a license plate, they can
1:47 am
then check other video systems with the same software, like those at rental companies or hotels to see if a suspect has checked in or out. eventually, they could conceivably track down the ots tomake bombs. re cookers or the computers are not enough, though. in the end, it will be people to help out. right now, they are not telling us whether it is their particular software helping the fbi. but no doubt about it. video intelligence is playing some part. >> huge piece in this puzzle but it's not the solid evidence that they're going to look for. hopefully it will lead them to the evidence, correct? >> right now they have video of the guy placing the backpack with the bomb in it, they believe. but they need to find the guys. get this. at some point, they might be able to program cameras with those suspects' pictures, then it would alert law enforcement if they ever run across this. we're getting another look
